How to Dice an Onion

I usually don't take the time to learn how to do things the "right" way unless I really find that it the "right" way is easier, safer and/or more helpful. Take dicing an onion for instance. Before I took my nutrition cooking lab, I used to dice an onion in such a messy way...pieces would be flying everywhere and they would be all different sizes. Then I learned the real way of dicing an onion and I found it helped me SO much.
An onion. Notice the hairy, dull end and the pointier end.
You want to chop off the pointy end and peel off the skin
Slice the onion right down the middle of the hairy end
Place one half of the onion flat side down, and begin making vertical strips, making sure to keep the hairy end intact
More vertical slicing fun
After that, make horizontal cuts across the vertical cuts, creating equal sized diced pieces
Afterwards, use the back of the knife to collect the pieces into the bowl
