How to Dice an Onion
I usually don't take the time to learn how to do things the "right" way unless I really find that it the "right" way is easier, safer and/or more helpful. Take dicing an onion for instance. Before I took my nutrition cooking lab, I used to dice an onion in such a messy way...pieces would be flying everywhere and they would be all different sizes. Then I learned the real way of dicing an onion and I found it helped me SO much.

An onion. Notice the hairy, dull end and the pointier end. |
You want to chop off the pointy end and peel off the skin |
Slice the onion right down the middle of the hairy end |
Place one half of the onion flat side down, and begin making vertical strips, making sure to keep the hairy end intact |
More vertical slicing fun |
After that, make horizontal cuts across the vertical cuts, creating equal sized diced pieces |
Afterwards, use the back of the knife to collect the pieces into the bowl |
